For a second time … and a third time, they urged the Buddha to turn back. Then, after the meal, on his return from almsround, he set his lodgings in order and, taking his bowl and robe, he walked down the road that led to Aṅgulimāla. 二度目もまた……さらに三度目も、牛飼いたちや羊飼いたち、農夫たち、旅人たちは世尊に同じことを申し上げた。
さて世尊は、食後、托鉢（たくはつ）より戻られると、臥所（がしょ）を整え、鉢と衣（ころも）を携えて、盗賊アングリマーラのいる方角へと続く道を歩み始められた。牛飼いたちや羊飼いたち、農夫たち、旅人たちは、世尊がアングリマーラのいる道を進まれているのを見て、こう申し上げた。
「沙門（さもん）よ、この道を行ってはなりません。沙門よ、この道にはアングリマーラという盗賊がおります。彼は凶暴にして、血塗られた手をもち、殺生を重ねた冷酷な者、生きとし生けるものに対して慈悲の心を持たぬ者であります。彼は村々を廃墟と化し……」
