Then the king went over to Aṅgulimāla and said, “Sir, is the master really Aṅgulimāla?” But at that time Venerable Aṅgulimāla lived in the wilderness, ate only almsfood, and owned just three robes. “Please, great king, go at your convenience.” Then King Pasenadi got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving. そのとき、コーサラ国のパセーナディ王は、アングリマーラ尊者のもとへと近づき、こうお尋ねになった。「尊師よ、アングリマーラ（Aṅgulimāla）とは、まことにこの方でございましょうか」と。
そのころ、アングリマーラ尊者は、林住者（āraññika）として森に住み、托鉢（piṇḍapāta）によって食を得、糞掃衣（paṁsukūla）をまとい、三衣（tecīvara）のみを所有して修行に励んでおられた。
「大王よ、今はご都合のよろしいときにお越しくださいませ」
そこでコーサラ国のパセーナディ王は座より立ち上がり、世尊を礼拝し、右繞（うにょう）して退出された。
すると、アングリマーラ尊者は王に向かってこう申し上げた。「大王よ、もはや十分でございます。わたくしの衣（cīvara）はすでに揃っております」
そののち王は再び世尊のもとへ戻り、礼拝して座に着かれた。
