これが、王子よ、私に浮かんだ第三の譬えでございます。これらの三つの譬えは、いずれも神通（じんつう）によって啓示されたものでもなく、かつて聞いたことのあるものでもなく、ただ自ずと私の心に浮かんだものでございます。
王子よ、たとえばここに、乾ききって萎びた一本の丸太があり、それが水を遠く離れた乾いた陸地に置かれているとしましょう。そこへ一人の人がやって来て、上木（うえき）を手に取り、「火を起こし、熱を生じさせよう」と思うとします。
王子よ、これをいかにお思いになりますか。その人が、水を遠く離れた乾いた陸地に置かれた、その乾ききって萎びた丸太に上木をあてがい、きりきりと錐揉（きりも）みにして、果たして火を起こし、熱を生ぜしめることができるでございましょうか。
