What do you think, Prince? By drilling the stick against that green, sappy log on dry land far from water, could they light a fire and produce heat?” “No, sir. Why is that? 「王子よ、たとえばここに、水気を含んだ青木（あおき）があるとしましょう。その木は、水辺を離れて陸の上に置かれております。そこへある人がやって来て、火錐（ひきり）の棒を手にして、『火を起こそう、炎を現わそう』と考えます。王子よ、どう思われますか。その人が、水辺を離れて陸の上に置かれたその水気含む青木に、火錐の棒を押し当てて揉み続けたとして、はたして火を起こし、炎を現わすことができるでしょうか」
「いいえ、尊者よ、それはできません。なぜかと申しますならば、尊者よ、その木はたとえ水辺を離れて陸の上に置かれてはおりましても、やはり水気を含んだ青木に他なりませぬゆえに」
「王子よ、そこでまた、第三の譬えが私の心に浮かんだのです。ちょうどそのように……」
