When a pair of men are living, the one who breaks such good practice is their final man. Therefore I say to you, ‘My dear barber, when you see grey hairs growing on my head, please tell me.’ “Keep up this good practice that I have founded. Do not be my final man.”’ ‘Yes, Your Majesty,’ replied the barber. When many thousand years had passed, the barber saw grey hairs growing on the king’s head. 「いかなる人の世代においても、このような善き習わしを断ち切る者こそが、その者たちの最後の人（アンティマプリサ）となるのである。それゆえ、童子よ、わたしはかの者にこう申し伝えた――『親愛なる床師（カッパカ）よ、わが頭に白髪の生じているのを見たならば、そのことをわたしに告げよ。わたしの打ち立てたこの善き習わしを受け継ぎ、絶やすことなく伝えよ。汝よ、わたしの最後の人となることなかれ』と。」
「御意のままに」と、アーナンダよ、床師はマーガデーヴァ王に答えた。
さてアーナンダよ、幾千年、幾百千年の歳月が流れ過ぎたのち、床師は王の頭に白髪の生じているのを見た。そして王にこう申し上げた。「天の使者（デーヴァドゥータ）たちが、大王のもとに姿を現しました。白き御髪が見受けられます――」
