‘Surely King Maghadeva, by whom that good practice was founded, must have been someone else at that time?’ But you should not see it like this. I myself was King Maghadeva at that time. I was the one who founded that good practice, which was kept up by those who came after. But that good practice doesn’t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. It only leads as far as rebirth in the realm of divinity. 「では、そのとき善き行いを打ち立てたマガデーヴァ王とは、きっと別の誰かであったのでしょう」と思ってはならない。アーナンダよ、そのように見てはならない。そのとき、マガデーヴァ王であったのは、ほかならぬ私自身である。その善き行いを打ち立てたのは私であり、私によって打ち立てられたその善き行いは、後に続く人々によって受け継がれてきたのである。
しかしながらアーナンダよ、かの善き行いは、厭離（nibbidā）へと導かず、離貪（virāga）へと導かず、滅尽（nirodha）へと導かず、寂静（upasama）へと導かず、神通（abhiññā）へと導かず、正覚（sambodhi）へと導かず、涅槃（nibbāna）へと導くものではなかった。それはただ、梵天界（brahmaloka）への再生をもたらすに過ぎなかったのである。
しかるに今、私はここに新たな善き行いを打ち立てた。それはひとえに——
