“I’ll make sure, sir, to get my parents’ permission.” Then Raṭṭhapāla got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha. Then he went to his parents and said, For a second time, and a third time, Raṭṭhapāla asked his parents for permission, but got the same reply. “Mum and dad, as I understand the Buddha’s teachings, it’s not easy for someone living at home to lead the spiritual life utterly full and pure, like a polished shell. 「かしこまりました、尊者よ。父母の許しを得られますよう、努めてまいります」
ラッタパーラ青年はかくのごとく申し述べると、座より立ち上がり、世尊を礼拝し、右繞（うにょう）してのち、父母のもとへと赴いた。そして父母に向かって、こう申し上げた。
ラッタパーラ青年は二度にわたり、また三度にわたり、父母に出家の許しを求めたが、そのたびに同じ答えが返ってくるばかりであった。
「お父上、お母上よ、わたくしが世尊（ブッダ）の説かれた法（ダンマ）を理解するところによれば、在家（がいか）にあって、磨き上げた貝のごとく、ひたすら円満にして清浄なる梵行（ぼんぎょう）を修めることは、けして容易いことではございません」
そのときラッタパーラはこのように思った。「父母はわたくしに許しを与えてくださらない……」
