「あるいは大海の彼方からでも、信頼のおける使者がやってきて、同じことを申すでありましょう。そのときラッタパーラ殿、この言葉の意味をいかに解すべきか、と問われたなら、あなたはどうなさいますか」
「それもまた征服し、支配下に置くでありましょう」
「大王よ、まさにそのことを指して、かの世尊――よく知り、よく見、真実に目覚めた尊き完全覚者（阿羅漢・正等覚者）――はこのように説かれたのであります。『世は欠乏し、満足することなく、渇愛（タンハー）の奴隷である』と。わたくしはこのことを知り、見、聞いて、在家の生を捨て、家なき出家の道へと踏み出したのでございます」
「ラッタパーラ殿よ、まことに不思議なことである、まことに希有なことである。世尊のこの御言葉は、なんと深く説き尽くされていることか」
