He thought, “As I understand the Buddha’s teaching, it’s not easy for someone living at home to lead the spiritual life utterly full and pure, like a polished shell. ラッタパーラという良家の子息は、こう思った。「私が世尊の説かれた教法（ダンマ）を理解するかぎり、在家（アガーラ）にとどまりながら、磨き抜かれた貝殻のごとく、完全に清らかな梵行（ブラフマチャリヤ）を修めることは容易ではない。いざ、髪と鬚を剃り落とし、袈裟（カーサーヤ）の衣をまとい、家（アガーラ）を離れて出家（パッバジャー）の道に踏み出そうではないか」と。
「この王宮には、地中に蔵されたものも、地上に積まれたものも、夥しい黄金・純金が存在するではありませんか」〔と人々は言った。〕
しかしラッタパーラはこう答えた。「されど、その財産（ボーガ）はいずれ他の者どもが受け継ぐことになりましょう。私はただ、己が業（カンマ）のままに逝くほかはありません」と。
