「大王よ、かの世尊——知り見たもう、応供（おうぐ）、正等覚者——は、四つの法の要義（ようぎ）を説き示されました。わたくしはそれらを知り、見、聞いて、家より出でて家なき者となったのです。その四つとは何か。
『世は移ろいやすく、常なるものなし（無常）』——大王よ、これが、かの世尊——知り見たもう、応供、正等覚者——によって説き示された第一の法の要義にして、わたくしがそれを知り、見、聞いて、家より出でて家なき者となった所以（ゆえん）であります。
『世は帰るべき拠り所なく、救い守るものなし』——これが第二の……」
