そのとき、ラッタパーラ尊者の父は尊者のもとへ近づき、こう言った。「ラッタパーラよ、昨夜の粥（かゆ）などを食べておられるのですか。なぜご自身の家にお帰りにならないのですか。」
「居士（がじ）よ、在家の生活を捨てて出家（しゅっけ）し、無家（むか）の身となった私どもに、どうして家があるというのでしょうか。私どもは無家の者なのです。居士よ、たしかにあなたのお宅へ参りましたが、そこでは布施（ふせ）もいただけず、丁重にお断りのお言葉もいただけず、ただ罵倒（ばとう）を受けるばかりでございました。」
「さあ、ラッタパーラよ、家へ帰りましょう。」
〔やがて〕トゥッラコッティカの婆羅門（バラモン）たちや居士たちはこれを耳にした——「沙門（しゃもん）ゴー〔タマのもとで出家した者が戻ってきたらしい〕……」
