May the Buddha please give me the going forth.” And Raṭṭhapāla received the going forth, the ordination in the Buddha’s presence. 「世尊よ、どうか私めに出家をお許しください」と。かくしてラッタパーラ善男子は、世尊のみもとにて出家（パッバッジャー）を得、具足戒（ウパサンパダー）を受けた。
さて世尊は、ラッタパーラ長老が具足戒を受けてより半月ののち、トゥッラコッティカにて思う存分滞在されてから、サーヴァッティーへと旅立たれた。次第に遊行（チャーリカー）を続けられ、やがてサーヴァッティーに至られた。そこにおいて世尊は、サーヴァッティーのジェータ林、アナータピンディカの園精舎に滞在された。
そのころラッタパーラ長老は、ただ独り遠離して（ヴューパカッタ）、放逸することなく、熱心に、身心を励まして住していた。善家の子らが正しく家を出て出家する、その目的たるところの——無上の梵行（ぼんぎょう）の究竟（くきょう）を、まさしく現世において自ら証知し、実現して、成就するに至った。
