Nevertheless, Udāyī, leave aside the first beginning and the final end. I shall teach you the Dhamma: ‘When this exists, this comes to be; due to the arising of this, this arises. 「しかしながら、ウダーイーよ、過去の始まりのことは措いておきなさい。未来の終わりのことも措いておきなさい。わたしはそなたに法（ダンマ）を説こう。――『これあるとき、かれあり。これ生ずるによりて、かれ生ず。これなきとき、かれなし。これ滅するによりて、かれ滅す』と」
「しかし、尊師よ、わたしはこの生涯において経験してきたことでさえ、その様相と詳細をつぶさに思い起こすことができませぬ。それゆえ、自らの師の教え（ācariyaka）についての問いに答えることによって、世尊のお心に適うことができればと思うのみでございます。まして、いくつもの過去世（pubbenivāsa）の生存を――たとえば一生、二生……というふうに――いかにしてつぶさに思い起こすことができましょうや」
