And it’s the wrong time to see the esteemed mendicants, as they’re in retreat. Why don’t I go to Mallikā’s monastery to visit the wanderer Uggāhamāna?” So that’s what he did. 折しも、尊ぶべき比丘（びく）たちに会うには時節が悪かった。諸々の尊い比丘たちは独居修行（パティサッラーナ）に入っておられたのである。「それならば、マッリカーの園にある一柱堂（エカサーラカ）のティンドゥカーチーラ樹のほとりにある遊行者（パリッバージャカ）、沙門の娘の子ウッガーハマーナのもとへ参ろうではないか」と。かくして大工（タパティ）のパンチャカンガは、マッリカーの園のエカサーラカへと、遊行者ウッガーハマーナのもとへ赴いていった。
そのとき、遊行者ウッガーハマーナ・サマナムンディカープッタは、大勢の遊行者の集いとともに座していた。その場は喧騒（けんそう）に満ちており、あたりは騒々しい大きな声に包まれていた。彼らは様々な下劣な話（チャッタ）に興じていた。すなわち、王のこと、盗賊のこと、大臣のこと、軍勢のこと、危難のこと、戦争のこと、食べ物のこと、飲み物のこと、衣服のこと……といった類の話である。
やがて、それらの遊行者たちは静まり返った。
