What do you think, Udāyī? Would my disciples, knowing and seeing this, break in and interrupt me?” “No, sir.” “That’s because I don’t expect to be instructed by my disciples. Invariably, my disciples expect instruction from me. Since this is so, Furthermore, my disciples come to me and ask how the noble truth of suffering applies to the suffering in which they are swamped and mired. 「ウダーイよ、そなたはどう思うか。わが弟子たちは、このように知り、このように見ながら、途中で割り込んでわたしの言葉を遮るであろうか」
「いいえ、世尊よ、そのようなことはございません」
「ウダーイよ、わたしは弟子たちに教導（アヌサーサニー）を求めることはない。弟子たちはひたすらわたしに教導を求めるのである。そうであればこそ、弟子たちはわたしを高い智慧（パンニャー）において尊敬するのである。
さらにまた、ウダーイよ、わが弟子たちは、ある苦（ドゥッカ）によって苦に貫かれ、苦に覆われているとき、わたしのもとに来て、苦の聖なる真理（苦聖諦・ドゥッカ・アリヤサッチャ）について問う。わたしは問われるままに苦の聖諦を説き明かし、その問いへの答えをもって彼らの心を満ち足らせるのである。
これが、わが弟子たちがわたしを……とする第四の徳である。」
