‘The ascetic Gotama only claims to know when he does in fact know. He only claims to see when he really does see. He teaches based on direct knowledge, not without direct knowledge. He teaches based on reason, not without reason. 「沙門ゴータマは、知るときにのみ『知る』と言い、見るときにのみ『見る』と言われる。沙門ゴータマは直接智（abhiññā）に基づいて法（dhamma）を説かれ、直接智なくして説かれることはない。沙門ゴータマは根拠（nidāna）に基づいて法を説かれ、根拠なくして説かれることはない。沙門ゴータマは論証（pāṭihāriya）を伴って法を説かれ、論証なくして説かれることはない」と。
ウダーイよ、このゆえに、わが弟子たちは、すぐれた智慧（paññā）の点においても、わたしを尊重するのである。これが第三の法（dhamma）であり、この法ゆえに、わが弟子たちはわたしを敬い、重んじ、尊び、供養し、敬い重んじたのちに、わたしを依処（upanissāya）として住するのである。
