かくして、彼は欲楽（kāma）をまったく離れ、不善（akusala）の諸法を離れて、尋（vitakka）と伺（vicāra）とを具え、遠離（viveka）より生じた喜（pīti）と楽（sukha）とを有する初禅（paṭhama-jhāna）に入り、そこに住する。
サンダカよ、およそある師のもとで弟子がかくのごとき優れた殊勝なる境地を証得するならば、智慧ある人はその師のもとで、できうる限りの誠意をもって梵行（brahmacariya）を修すべきであり、またよく修しつつ、正理（ñāya）にかなった善なる法を成就すべきである。
さてそのとき、遊行者（paribbājaka）サンダカは、おびただしく喧騒し、声高く大きな声で、さまざまな世俗の雑談——すなわち……——を語り合う多くの遊行者の衆とともに座していた。そこでかの遊行者たちは、沈黙し……
