「しかるに、この師（さとれる者）にとって、裸形（らぎょう）であること、剃髪（ていはつ）であること、蹲踞（そんきょ）の苦行に励むこと、髪髯（はつぜん）を抜き去ることは、すべて余事に過ぎない。そは、わたしは子どもたちと共に家に住み、カーシ（迦尸）より取り寄せた栴檀（せんだん）を用い、花鬘（かまん）・香料・塗香（ずこう）を身に帯び、金銀（黄金と貨幣）を受け取りながら、来世においてこの師と全く同じ果報を得るであろうからである。わたしは何を知り、何を見て、この師のもとで梵行（ぼんぎょう）を修めなければならないのか。」
サンダカよ、これが、かの世尊・応供・正等覚者によって、智慧ある者が真摯に梵行を修めることを妨げるものとして説かれた、第三の非梵行住（ひぼんぎょうじゅう）である。
