With clairaudience that is purified and superhuman, the Buddha heard this discussion between the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan and the wanderer Māgaṇḍiya. Coming out of retreat, he went to the brahmin’s fire chamber and sat on the grass mat. Then the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan went to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him. 世尊は、清浄にして人知を超えた天耳（てんに）の神通力をもって、バーラドヴァージャ姓のバラモンと遍歴行者マーガンディヤとのこの対話をお聞きになった。
やがて世尊は、夕暮れどきに独坐（どくざ）の瞑想より立ち上がり、バーラドヴァージャ姓のバラモンの祀り火の堂（agyāgāra）へと赴かれた。そこに敷かれた草の座（tiṇasanthāraka）の上に、世尊は静かに座につかれた。
するとバーラドヴァージャ姓のバラモンは、世尊のもとへと近づき、世尊と親しく挨拶を交わした。心なごむ儀礼の言葉をひとわたり交わし終えると、かたわらに座した。
かたわらに座したバラモンに、世尊はこのように仰せになった。「バーラドヴァージャよ、そなたは遍歴行者マーガンディヤと何事かを語り合ったのではないか——」
