They might hear a sighted person saying: ‘White cloth is really nice, it’s attractive, stainless, and clean.’ They’d go in search of white cloth. 「目ある人が『白い衣はまことに見事なものです。美しく、汚れなく、清らかです』と語るのを、彼は耳にするかもしれません。そこで彼は白い衣を求めて歩き回ります。ところがある者が、油と垢にまみれた粗末なぼろ布をもって彼を欺き、こう言うのです。『やあ、あなた、これがあなたのための白い衣ですよ。美しく、汚れなく、清らかです』と。彼はそれを受け取り、受け取ってはそれを纏い、纏っては喜びの声を上げるのです。『白い衣はまことに見事なものです。美しく、汚れなく、清らかです』と。
「マーガンディヤよ、それと同じように、外道（げどう）の遍歴修行者たち（paribbājaka）は盲目であり、眼を持たず、健やかさ（ārogya）とは何かを知らず、また涅槃（nibbāna）とは何かを見ることもできません。
