tastes … touches known by the body, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. Some time later—having truly understood the origin, disappearance, gratification, drawback, and escape of sensual pleasures, and having given up craving and dispelled passion for sensual pleasures—I live rid of thirst, my mind peaceful inside. 舌によって知られる味わいや……身によって知られる触れ（phassa）のうち、好ましく、慕わしく、心地よく、楽しく、感官的な欲楽（kāma）にまつわり、心を染める（rajanīya）ものを。
やがてある時、わたしは感官的な欲楽（kāma）の生起と消滅、その甘美（assāda）と過患（ādīnava）、そして出離（nissaraṇa）とを、あるがままに（yathābhūtaṁ）了知し、欲愛（kāmataṇhā）を捨て、欲楽への炎熱（kāmapariḷāha）を退け、渇き（pipāsā）を離れ、内に心の静まりを得て住している。
そしてわたしは、他の多くの衆生が、感官的な欲楽への貪りを脱せぬまま、欲愛（kāmataṇhā）に喰い尽くされ、欲楽の炎熱（kāmapariḷāha）に焼かれながら、なおも欲楽を追い求めているのを見る。しかしわたしは、彼らを羨まず、そのことに喜びを見出さない。
それはいかなる故か。
