その薬によって癩病（らいびょう）より癒され、健康となり、安楽を得て、自由の身となり、己の主となって、思うままに行くことができるでしょう。そのような人が、今度は別の癩病を患う者を見たとします。その者は四肢に潰瘍（かいよう）と水疱（すいほう）が生じ、蛆虫（うじむし）に喰われ、爪で傷口をかきむしり、燃え盛る炭火の穴の上で己が身を焼いているのです。
マーガンディヤよ、あなたはどう思われますか。かつて癩病より癒されたその人は、癩病を患うその者のことを、燃え盛る炭火の穴ゆえに、あるいは薬を服（の）むがゆえに、羨（うらや）ましいと思うでしょうか。」
「いいえ、ゴータマよ、決してそのようなことはございません。それはなぜかと申しますならば――」
「マーガンディヤよ、まさにそのように、わたしもまた、かつて在家者であったとき、五種の欲楽（かまぐな）を具足し、余すところなく享受していたのです。」
