身体によって感知されるものであり、愛しく、望ましく、快く、喜ばしく、官能的で、心を惹きつけるような触感のことである。マーガンディヤよ、わたしには三つの楼閣（ろうかく）があった。一つは雨季のためのもの、一つは冬のためのもの、一つは夏のためのものであった。わたしは雨季の楼閣において、男を交えぬ楽人たちに侍らせ、四ヶ月の雨安居（うあんご）の間、ひとたびも楼下に降りることなく過ごしたのである。
しかるのちに、わたしは感覚的欲望（欲・kāma）の生起と消滅、その味わい（味・assāda）と危険（患・ādīnava）と出離（出離・nissaraṇa）とを、あるがままに真実として知り見て、欲への渇愛（欲愛・kāmataṇhā）を捨て去り、欲の熱悩（熱・pariḷāha）を鎮め、渇きを離れ、内に心の静まりを得て住するに至った。
