this spiritual path is complete in that respect. If the worthy Gotama and the monks were the only ones to succeed in this teaching, not any nuns … chaste laymen … Just as the Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines towards the ocean, and keeps pressing into the ocean, in the same way Mister Gotama’s assembly—with both laypeople and renunciates—slants, slopes, and inclines towards extinguishment, and keeps pressing upon extinguishment. 「かくして、この梵行（ぼんぎょう）はその点において完全なるものであります。もし、ゴータマ尊者と比丘たちのみがこの法において成就し、比丘尼たちが成就しておらず……在家の白衣（びゃくえ）を纏いて梵行を修める優婆塞（うばそく）たちが成就しておらず……たとえばゴータマ尊者よ、ガンジス河が海へと傾き、海へと向かい、海へとそそぎ落ちて、そのまま海へと注ぎ込むがごとく、まさにそのようにゴータマ尊者の僧伽（さんが）は――在家者と出家者の双方をもって――涅槃（ねはん）へと傾き、涅槃へと向かい、涅槃へと流れ落ちて、そのまま涅槃へと注ぎ込むのであります。
善きかな、ゴータマ尊者よ、善きかな。……われはゴータマ尊者に帰依し奉ります。」
