From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.” “Worthy Gotama, is this your view: ‘The cosmos is eternal. 「今日よりのち、尊者ゴータマよ、どうか私を、命のある限り三宝に帰依した在家信者（ウパーサカ）としてお認めください。」
「ヴァッチャよ、では問うが、汝はこのような見解を持つか——『世界は常住（サッサタ）である。これのみが真実であり、それ以外は虚妄に過ぎぬ』と。」
「ヴァッチャよ、私はそのような見解を持たない。」
「さらば、このような見解はどうか——『世界は無常（アサッサタ）である。これのみが真実であり、それ以外は虚妄に過ぎぬ』と。」
「ヴァッチャよ、私はそのような見解も持たない。」
「では、このような見解はどうか——『世界は有限（アンタヴァー）である。これのみが真実であり、それ以外は虚妄に過ぎぬ』と。」
