そののち、遍歴行者ヴァッチャゴッタは世尊のもとへ赴いた。赴いて、世尊と挨拶を交わし、喜ばしく記憶すべき言葉を語り合ってのち、一方に座した。一方に座したヴァッチャゴッタ遍歴行者は、世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「ヴァッチャよ、まさにそのように、如来（タターガタ）を説き示すよりどころとなるような色（ルーパ）は、すでに捨断され、根を断ち切られ、多羅樹の切り株のごとく滅され、再び生ずることなき状態となっています。……識（ヴィンニャーナ）にいたるまで、如来を説き示すよりどころとなるものは、すでに捨断され、根を断ち切られ、多羅樹の切り株のごとく滅され、将来にわたって生起することのない状態となっているのです。」
わたくしであれば、このように問われたならば、こう答えましょう。「ヴァッチャよ、いまあなたの眼前に燃えているこの火は、何を縁（よすが）として燃えているのでしょうか」と。
