「ゴータマ尊者よ、私はここに至って理解できなくなってしまいました。迷いの中に落ちてしまったのです。先ほどまでの尊者との対話によって生じておりましたわずかな明晰さでさえ、今はすでに消え去ってしまいました。」
「ヴァッチャよ、あなたが理解できないのも無理はない。迷いに陥ったのも無理はない。なぜなら、この法（ダンマ）は甚深（じんじん）にして見難く、覚り難く、寂静にして崇高であり、思量（しりょう）の及ぶところにあらず、微妙にして、智慧ある者にのみ体得されるものだからである。あなたには理解し難いものがある――異なる見解（ディッティ）を持ち、異なる信条を奉じ、異なる好みを持ち、異なる修行に励み、異なる師の教えに従っているゆえに。さあ、ヴァッチャよ、それゆえ私はあなたにこの点について問い返すことにしよう。あなたの思うところを、そのままに答えてほしい。どのようにお考えか――」
