Take a laywoman who hears this: ‘The laywoman named so-and-so has passed away. The Buddha has declared that, with the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion, she’s a once-returner. She’ll come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering.’ And she’s either seen for herself, or heard from someone else, that that sister had such ethics, such qualities, such wisdom, such meditation, or such freedom. アヌルッダよ、ここに一人の優婆夷（うばい）がいて、次のような話を耳にしたとする。「某という名の優婆夷が亡くなられた。世尊はその方について、三つの結（けつ）を断じ尽くし、貪・瞋・痴（とん・じん・ち）が薄らいだことにより、一来（いちらい）の境地を得られたと宣言された。その方はこの世に一度だけ還り来て、苦（く）の終わりを成就されるであろう」と。さてその優婆夷は、亡き姉妹のことを、みずから直接に知っていたか、あるいは人伝に聞き及んでいた。「あの姉妹はかくのごとき戒（かい）を具えておられた、かくのごとき法（ほう）を身に備えておられた、かくのごとき智慧（ちえ）をお持ちであった、かくのごとき修行の境涯に住しておられた、かくのごとき解脱（げだつ）を成就しておられた」と。そして彼女は、その姉妹の信（しん）・戒・聞（もん）・捨（しゃ）・慧（え）を憶念（おくねん）しつつ、そのことを目指して心を向ける。アヌルッダよ、このようにして——
