Take a monk who hears this: ‘The monk named so-and-so has passed away. The Buddha has declared that, with the ending of the five lower fetters, he’s been reborn spontaneously and will become extinguished there, not liable to return from that world.’ And he’s either seen for himself, or heard from someone else, that that venerable had such ethics, such qualities, such wisdom, such meditation, or such freedom. ここに、アヌルッダよ、ある比丘が次のように聞く。「これこれの名の比丘が命を終えた。かの者は世尊によって記別（きべつ）を与えられた——五つの下分結（かぶんけつ、orambhāgiyasaṃyojana）を余すところなく滅し尽くして、化生（けしょう）として生まれ、その境地において般涅槃（はつねはん）に入り、その世界から還ることなき法（ならい）を得た者である」と。しかもその比丘は、かの尊者を自ら親しく見ていたか、あるいは他より伝え聞いていた。「かの尊者はかくのごとき戒（かい）を具えた方であった、かくのごとき法（ほう）を具えた方であった……かくのごとき慧（え）を具えた方であった、かくのごとき住（じゅう）を具えた方であった、かくのごとき解脱（げだつ）を具えた方であった」と。かくて彼は、かの尊者の信（しん）・戒・聞（もん）・捨（しゃ）・慧を随念（ずいねん）しつつ、その目的のために心を傾け向ける。アヌルッダよ、このようにしてもまた、比丘には安楽（あんらく）が……
