And that’s what they do. Take some other monk who gets by with mere faith and love. In such a case, the monks say: ‘Reverends, this monk gets by with mere faith and love. Suppose we punish him, repeatedly pressuring him— no, let him not lose what little faith and love he has!’ Suppose there was a person with one eye. Their friends and colleagues, relatives and kin would protect that one eye: ‘Let them not lose the one eye that they have!’ In the same way, some monk gets by with mere faith and lo
そのような比丘を、比丘たちはさまざまに審問し、その結果、その諍い事（adhikaraṇa）はたちまち鎮まるのである。
バッダーリよ、ここにある比丘は、ただ信（saddhā）のみをよりどころとし、ただ愛（pema）のみをよりどころとして歩んでいるとしよう。そのとき、比丘たちはこのように思うのである。
「道友よ、この比丘はただ信のみをよりどころとし、ただ愛のみをよりどころとして歩んでいる。もしわれわれがこの比丘を強く責め、繰り返し追及するならば――かれのもつその僅かな信と愛までをも、失わせることになりはしないか」と。
バッダーリよ、たとえばここに片眼の人がいるとしよう。その人の友人・知人、親族・血縁の者たちは、その片眼を大切に守るであろう。「かれのもつその一つの眼を、失わせることのないように」と。
ちょうどそのように、ある比丘がただ信のみをよりどころとし、ただ愛のみをよりどころとして歩んでいるならば――
