‘the cosmos is finite,’ ‘the world is infinite,’ And why haven’t I declared these things? Because they aren’t beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. They don’t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. That’s why I haven’t declared them. And what have I declared? 「世界は有限である」「世界は無限である」——なぜ私がこれらのことを説き明かさなかったのか。マールキャプッタよ、それはこれらのことが、利益をもたらさず、梵行（ぼんぎょう）の根本にも関わらず、厭離（えんり）にも、離欲（りよく）にも、滅尽（めつじん）にも、寂静（じゃくじょう）にも、勝智（しょうち）にも、正覚（しょうがく）にも、涅槃（ねはん）にも導かぬものだからである。それゆえ、私はそれらを説き明かさなかったのである。では、マールキャプッタよ、私が説き明かしたこととは何か。私はこのように説き明かした——「これが苦（く）である」「これが苦の生起（しょうき）である」「これが苦の滅尽（めつじん）である」「これが苦の滅尽へと導く道（みち）である」と。
