‘a realized one neither still exists nor no longer exists after death’ there would be the living of the spiritual life. When there are any of these views there is rebirth, there is old age, there is death, and there is sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. 「死後において如来（タターガタ）は存在するのでもなく、また存在しないのでもない」という見解があったとしても、清浄行（ブラフマチャリヤ）の生活が成り立つわけではない。いかなるこれらの見解があろうとも、そこには生（ジャーティ）があり、老（ジャラー）があり、死（マラナ）があり、そして憂い、嘆き、苦（ドゥッカ）、悲しみ、悩みがある。
「世界は永遠ではない」という見解があったとしても、清浄行の生活が成り立つわけではない。マールキャプッタよ、「世界は永遠である」という見解があろうとも、あるいは「世界は永遠ではない」という見解があろうとも――まさに現世においてこれらのものを打ち滅ぼすことこそ、わたしが説くところである。
