「そなたはかつて私にこう言ったことがあるか。『世尊よ、私は世尊のもとで梵行（ぼんぎょう）を修めます。それゆえ世尊は私にこれらのことを説き明かしてくださるでしょう』と。そのようなことはなかったであろう。それならば、愚かなる者よ、そなたはいったい何者であり、何を拒もうとするのか。
『マールンキャプッタよ、来たれ、私のもとで梵行を修めよ。そうすれば私はそなたにこれらのことを説き明かすであろう』と、私がそなたに言ったことがあるか。」
「いいえ、世尊よ、そのようなことはございません。」
「あるいはそなたが私にこう申したことがあるか。『世尊よ、私は世尊のもとで梵行を修めます。それゆえ世尊は私にこれらのことを説き明かしてくださるでしょう』と。」
「いいえ、世尊よ、そのようなことはございません。」
「しかるに、マールンキャプッタよ、私がそなたに告げなかったことは明らかである。」
