そのとき世尊は、水差しにわずかに残った水をそのままにしておいて、ラーフラ尊者に告げられた。
「ラーフラよ、この水差しにわずかに残された水が見えるか」
「はい、尊師よ」
「ラーフラよ、故意に虚偽を語ること（sampajānamusāvāda）を恥じない者には、それほどしかサマンナ（sāmañña）――沙門たる資質――が残っていないのだ」
ついで世尊は、水差しに残っていたわずかな水をも捨てて、ラーフラ尊者に告げられた。
「ラーフラよ、捨てられたこのわずかな水が見えるか」
「はい、尊師よ」
「ラーフラよ、故意に虚偽を語ることを恥じない者には、それほどにサマンナ――沙門たる資質――が捨て去られてしまっているのだ」
