知ることなく、見ることなくして、わたしが一方的に取りあげて「これのみが真実であり、他はすべて虚妄である」と断言することは、わたくしにはふさわしくありません。
さて、「あらゆる意味において有（バヴァ）の滅尽というものは存在しない」と説き、かくのごとく見解を持つ沙門・婆羅門たちの言葉がもし真実であるならば、次のことが起こりえます。
――居士たちよ、この世には四種の人が存在し、現に見出されます。その四種とはいかなるものでしょうか。
居士たちよ、ここにある人は自ら苦行（アッタパリターパナー）を行ずる者であり、自己を苦しめることの実践に専ら従事しております。また居士たちよ、ここにある人は他者に苦行（パラパリターパナー）を課する者であり、他者を苦しめることの実践に専ら従事しております。
