「これこそが、衆生（しゅじょう）の経験しうる最高の楽（らく）と喜びである」と説く者があるならば、アーナンダよ、わたしはそれを認めるものではない。それはなぜか。アーナンダよ、この楽よりも、さらに勝れ、さらに微妙なる別の楽があるからである。
では、アーナンダよ、この楽よりも勝れ、微妙なる別の楽とは何か。ここに比丘（びく）が、尋（ヴィタッカ）と伺（ヴィチャーラ）の止息によって、第二禅（だいにぜん）に入り、そこに住する。これは内なる清浄（せいじょう）あり、心の一境性（いっきょうせい）あり、尋なく伺なく、定（じょう）より生ずる喜（ピーティ）と楽（スカ）とを具えたものである。
さらにまた、アーナンダよ、この楽よりも勝れ、微妙なる別の楽とは何か。ここに比丘が、喜（ピーティ）の離貪（りとん）によって、第三禅（だいさんぜん）に入り、そこに住する——
