An individual with wrong view is reborn in one of two places, I say: hell or the animal realm. So if the cow observance succeeds it leads to rebirth in the company of cows, but if it fails it leads to hell.” When he said this, Puṇṇa cried and burst out in tears. “Yes, sir,” he replied. The Buddha said this: The Buddha said to Seniya, “This is what I didn’t get through to you when I said: ‘Enough, Seniya, let it be. 「邪見（micchādiṭṭhi）を抱く者は、セーニヤよ、二つの行き先（gati）のいずれかに赴くと、わたしは説く——地獄（niraya）、あるいは畜生（tiracchānayoni）の胎である。かくして、セーニヤよ、牛の禁戒（govata）が成就すれば牛どもの仲間に生まれ、成就せざれば地獄に堕ちる」と。
このように説かれたとき、コーリヤの子プンナ、牛の禁戒を行じる者は、声をあげて泣き、涙を流した。
「はい、尊師よ」と、コーリヤの子プンナは世尊のことばを承った。
そこで世尊は、このように仰せになった。世尊は、裸形の行者セーニヤ、犬の禁戒を行じる者に向かってこう語られた。
「セーニヤよ、まさにそれゆえに、わたしはそなたに得心させることができなかったのだ。『もうよい、セーニヤよ、その問いは捨て置け。そのことをわたしに問うてはならぬ』と申したのは、そういうわけであった」
プンナは申し上げた。「尊師よ、わたくしが泣いておりますのは、世尊の仰せになったことゆえではございません——」
