Atha kho upāli gahapati bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā yena sakaṁ nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā dovārikaṁ āmantesi: “ajjatagge, samma dovārika, āvarāmi dvāraṁ nigaṇṭhānaṁ nigaṇṭhīnaṁ, anāvaṭaṁ dvāraṁ bhagavato bhikkhūnaṁ bhikkhunīnaṁ upāsakānaṁ upāsikānaṁ. そのとき、在家信者ウパーリは、世尊の御言葉を喜び、随喜して、座より立ち上がり、世尊を礼拝し、右繞（うじょう）して、自らの邸宅へと赴いた。赴いてから、門番に告げた。「門番よ、今日この日より、尼乾陀（にけんだ）の出家修行者たちと尼乾陀の尼僧たちには門を閉ざし、世尊の比丘（びく）・比丘尼（びくに）・優婆塞（うばそく）・優婆夷（うばい）たちには門を開いておくように。もし尼乾陀の修行者がやって来たならば、その者にこのように告げなさい。『お待ちください、尊者よ、お入りにならないでください。今日この日より、在家信者ウパーリは、沙門（しゃもん）ゴータマの弟子となりました。尼乾陀の修行者たちへの門は閉ざされております』と。」
