The distressing and feverish defilements that might arise because of arrogance do not occur in someone who is not arrogant.’ ‘Arrogance should be given up by not being arrogant.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it. 「慢（まん）を因縁として生ずるであろう煩悩（āsavā）の苦悩と熱悩とは、慢を離れた者にはかかる煩悩の苦悩と熱悩は生じない。』『慢を離れることによりて、慢は捨断されるべし』と——かく説きしは、まさにこれを縁として説きしものなり。
居士（gahapati）よ、これら八つの法（dhammā）は、簡略に説かれ、詳細に分別されたるものにして、聖者（ariya）の律（vinaya）において業務の断絶（vohārasamucchedo）へと導くものなり。されど、これだけをもって、聖者の律における、あらゆる意味においての、あらゆるあり方においての、完全なる業務の断絶とはなしえないのである。」
