マハーナーマよ、ここに聖なる弟子（アリヤサーヴァカ）がいて、戒（シーラ）を具え、波羅提木叉（パーティモッカ）の律儀によって自らを守り、正しい行いと正しい托鉢の場を具え、微細な罪過にもなお危険を見て、すでに受けた学処（シッカーパダ）を守り学ぶ。マハーナーマよ、このようにして聖なる弟子は戒を成就するのである。
では、マハーナーマよ、いかにして聖なる弟子は諸根の門（インドリヤグッタドヴァーラ）を守るのであるか。マハーナーマよ、聖なる弟子は次のように諸根の門を守る。眼をもって色（かたち）を見るにあたって、その相（ニミッタ）に捉われず、細相（アヌビャンジャナ）にも捉われない。もし眼根（チャックンドリヤ）が制御されないままであれば、貪欲と憂い（アビッジャー・ドーマナッサ）という悪しき不善の法が流れ込んでくるであろう――そのような危険をよく見知って、眼根を守り、眼根を制御することに努めるのである。
