中部経典（MN52 §5.1–9.1）
Furthermore, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption … third absorption … fourth absorption … Furthermore, a mendicant meditates spreading a heart full of love to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of love to the whole world—abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will. Then they reflect:
さらにまた、居士よ、比丘は尋（ヴィタッカ）と伺（ヴィチャーラ）の静まりによって、内なる清信を得て……第二禅（ドゥティヤ・ジャーナ）に入り、これに住する。さらにまた、居士よ、比丘は喜（ピーティ）の離れることによって……第三禅（タティヤ・ジャーナ）に入り、これに住する。さらにまた、居士よ、比丘は楽（スッカ）の捨断によって……第四禅（チャトゥッタ・ジャーナ）に入り、これに住する。
さらにまた、居士よ、比丘は慈（メッター）を具えた心をもって、一つの方角に遍満しつつ住する。同じく第二の方角に、同じく第三の方角に、同じく第四の方角に。かくのごとく、上に、下に、横に、あらゆる方向に、あらゆる所において、すべてを自己と同じものとみなして、慈を具えた心をもって、全世界に遍満しつつ住する——広大にして、無量にして、怨みなく、瞋恚（しんに）なき心をもって。
そのとき、かれはかく省察する——
