そして、このように深く思念する。「在家の生活は狭苦しく塵にまみれたものである。出家の道こそは、大空のごとく広々としている。在家にとどまりながら、磨きぬかれた螺貝のごとく、完全無欠にして清浄なる梵行（ぼんぎょう）を修めることは、容易なことではない。いっそのこと、髭と頭髪を剃り落とし、袈裟（かさや）の衣をまとい、在家の生活を捨てて出家（パッバッジャー）の道に入ろうではないか」と。
やがて彼は、多少の財産のいかんを問わず、またその親族の多寡にかかわらず、それらすべてを捨て去る。そして髭と頭髪を剃り落とし、袈裟の衣をまとい、在家の生活を離れて出家の道へと歩み出るのである。
