「比丘たちよ、他者の心の内（チェートパリヤーヤ）を知ることのできない、みずから吟味する者（ヴィーマンサカ）たる比丘は、如来（タターガタ）が正しく完全に目覚めた者（サンマーサンブッダ）であるか否かを見定めるために、如来をよく観察し、審らかにすべきである。」
「尊師よ、私どもの教法（ダンマ）は世尊を根本とし、世尊を導き手とし、世尊を帰依処（パティサラナ）といたします。どうか尊師よ、この仰せの意味を、世尊ご自身がお示しくださいますように。世尊のみ言葉を聴いて、比丘たちはよく憶持いたすことでしょう。」
「しからば比丘たちよ、よく聴き、心して思念せよ。今まさに説くであろう。」
「はい、尊師よ」と、彼ら比丘たちは世尊にお答え申し上げた。
世尊はかく説かれた。
