He wouldn’t put it down. Without reflection, he’d drink it. “Mendicants, sentient beings typically have the wish, desire, and hope: ‘Oh, if only unlikable, undesirable, and disagreeable things would decrease, and likable, desirable, and agreeable things would increase!’ But exactly the opposite happens to them. 彼はそれを置こうとはせず、よく考えもせずにそれを飲んでしまうであろう。
「比丘たちよ、世の衆生（しゅじょう）の多くは、かくのごとき欲（よく）を抱き、かくのごとき願いを持ち、かくのごとき思いを心に秘めている。『ああ、願わくば、好ましからざるもの、愛でがたきもの、意に沿わぬものは衰え滅び、好ましきもの、愛でたきもの、意に叶うものはいよいよ増し栄えんことを』と。しかるに、比丘たちよ、かくのごとき欲を抱き、かくのごとき願いを持ち、かくのごとき思いを心に秘めたる衆生に対して、まさにその逆のことが起こるのである。好ましからざるもの、愛でがたきもの、意に沿わぬものは増し栄え、好ましきもの、愛でたきもの、意に叶うものは衰え滅びていく。比丘たちよ、汝らはいかなる因（いん）によるとみるか。」
「世尊よ、われらの法（ダンマ）は世尊を根本（こんぽん）となし、世尊を導き手となし、世尊を帰依処（きえしょ）となしております。願わくば、世尊みずからこの意義をお示しくださいますように。
