「命根は、温熱（usmā）によって存在しつづけるのです」
「されば友よ、温熱は、何によって存在しつづけるのでありましょうか」
「さて友よ、命の形成力（āyusaṅkhārā・寿行）と、感受される諸法（vedaniyā dhammā）とは、まさに同一のものでありましょうか。それとも、命の形成力は一つのものであり、感受される諸法はまた別のものでありましょうか」
「友よ、命の形成力と感受される諸法とは、同一のものではありません。もし命の形成力と感受される諸法とが同一のものであったならば、想と受の滅（saññāvedayitanirodha）に入定した比丘が、そこより出定することは——」
