“Warmth depends on vitality to continue.” “Just now I understood you to say: ‘Vitality depends on warmth to continue.’ But I also understood you to say: ‘Warmth depends on vitality to continue.’ How then should we see the meaning of this statement?” “Well then, reverend, I shall give you a simile. 「温気（おんき）は寿命（じゅみょう）に依って存続する」
「友よ、今しがた私どもは、尊者サーリプッタの御言葉を、こう理解いたしました。『寿命は温気に依って存続する』と。しかるに今また、尊者サーリプッタの御言葉を、こう理解いたしました。『温気は寿命に依って存続する』と。友よ、この御言葉の意味は、いかに見るべきでありましょうか」
「さあ友よ、では譬えをもってお話しいたしましょう。譬えによって、聡明なる人々は説かれた言葉の意味を理解するものです。友よ、たとえばここに、油を燃料として燃える灯火（とうか）があるとしましょう。その炎（ほのお）に依って光明（こうみょう）が現れ、光明に依って炎が現れる。
