“Excellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, worthy Gotama has made the teaching clear in many ways. We go for refuge to the worthy Gotama, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saṅgha. 「まことに、尊きゴータマよ、素晴らしい御言葉にございます。まことに素晴らしい。たとえば、倒れたものを起こし、覆われたものを開き、迷える者に道を示し、あるいは暗闇の中に油の灯火（ともしび）を掲げて、眼ある者はかたちを見るであろう、と――そのように、尊きゴータマは、あまたの方便（pariyāya）をもって、法（ダンマ）を明らかにしてくださいました。わたくしどもは、尊きゴータマに帰依（サラナ）し奉り、法（ダンマ）に帰依し、比丘の僧伽（サンガ）に帰依し奉ります。今日よりのちは、命ある限り帰依した在家信者（ウパーサカ）として、わたくしどもをお認めくださいますよう。」
