「そなたたちは、何者かと問われたとき、自らを沙門（さもん）と称する。そのように呼ばれ、そのように名乗る以上、比丘たちよ、次のように修行に励むべきである。『われわれは、沙門にふさわしい正しき道を歩もう。そうすれば、われわれの呼び名も偽りなく、名乗りも正しきものとなるであろう。われわれが受用する衣（ころも）・食（じき）・臥具（がぐ）・病者のための薬品・資具、それらをもって施してくださる方々に対し、その功徳は大いなる果報（かほう）をもたらし、大いなる利益となるであろう。またわれわれの出家（しゅっけ）も、むなしからず、果実を結び、豊かなるものとなるであろう』と。では、比丘たちよ、いかにして比丘は沙門にふさわしき正道（しょうどう）を歩まざる者となるのか。いかなる比丘であれ、貪欲（とんよく）の心を抱き、その貪欲を断ぜず、瞋恚（しんに）に汚れた心を持ち……」
