In the same way, a mendicant recollects their many kinds of past lives, with features and details. “Mendicants, people label you as ascetics. And when they ask you what you are, you claim to be ascetics. Given this label and this claim, you should train like this: ‘We will undertake and follow the things that make one an ascetic and a brahmin. 「比丘たちよ、これと同じように、比丘は自らの種々なる前世（ぷぶべにわーさ）を憶念（おくねん）する。すなわち、一生涯、二生涯……というように、その相（そう）と詳細とをともなって、種々なる前世を憶念するのである。
比丘たちよ、世人はなんじらを『沙門（さもん）』と呼ぶ。またなんじらも、『汝らは何者か』と問われたならば、『われらは沙門である』と答えるであろう。比丘たちよ、かくのごとく呼ばれ、かくのごとく答えるからには、なんじらはこのように修学すべきである。
『われらは、人を沙門（さもん）たらしめ、婆羅門（ばらもん）たらしめる諸法（しょほう）を受持（じゅじ）し、それに従って行じるであろう。そのようにしてこそ、われらに対するこの称呼（しょうこ）は真実となり、われらの答えは正しきものとなるであろう。
衣（え）・食（じき）・臥具（がぐ）・病者のための医薬資具（いやくしぐ）を施してくださる人々の……』」
