Ignorance was banished and knowledge arose; darkness was banished and light arose, as happens for a meditator who is diligent, keen, and resolute. But even such pleasant feeling did not occupy my mind. 無明（むみょう）は打ち砕かれ、智慧（ちえ）は生じた。闇は払われ、光は現れた——それは、怠ることなく、熱心に、ひたすら専心して修行に住する者に起こるがごとく。
されど、アッギヴェッサナよ、かくのごとき生じたる楽受（らくじゅ）も、わが心を制することはなかった。
アッギヴェッサナよ、わたしは幾百人もの集いに対して法（ダンマ）を説いたことを憶念している。そのとき、一人一人はみな、「沙門ゴータマはまさに自分のためにこそ法を説いてくださっている」と思ったことであろう。しかし、アッギヴェッサナよ、そのように見てはならない。如来（にょらい）が他者に法を説くのは、ただひとえに、人々が理解し得るようにするためにほかならない。
